High schoolers hold dance to help China orphans

More than 130 teens from Darien and New Canaan had a chance to boogie to their favorite music at New Canaan’s Outback Teen Center on Saturday night, March 14, for a good cause. The dance was organized by the members of Darien High School’s China Care Club, which raises awareness and money for orphans in China who have medical needs.
“My passion for these children originated when I visited the China Care home in Beijing, said Mackenzie Milne, a senior and co-president of Darien High School’s China Care Club. “It’s so great to know that a specific child’s surgery took place because we funded it.”
China Care Foundation is a Westport-based non-profit that saves the lives of orphaned children in China who are desperate for medical attention. The organization provides the children with critical surgeries and treatment. It is opening a new state-of-the-art medical facility in Beijing to help more children in the spring.
China Care recognizes more than three dozen student-run clubs across North America like the one at Darien High School. When the clubs raise money for China Care, they often opt to help raise money for a particular child’s surgery.
The benefit on Saturday raised more than $1,200 from ticket sales. The students charged a $10 entrance fee, and the New Canaan Outback generously donated the venue.
“It’s so much fun to see kids willing to give of themselves for others who don’t have as much,” said Shannon Eagan, the faculty adviser to Darien High School’s China Care Club and a chaperone for Saturday’s event.
Darien’s China Care Club has been supporting China Care Foundation for three years.
Darien High School senior and club co-president Katie Marren was excited by both the turnout and the enthusiasm of the dancers.
“It was a great night!” she said.
