Deadlines for registering to vote — or for joining a political party — in time for the Aug. 10 primary are approaching.
The Registrar of Voters Office will be open this Tuesday, July 27 from 9 to 4:30.
To vote in the primary on Aug. 10, 2010, people must be enrolled in a party.
The deadline for new voters to register and for unaffiliated voters, to enroll in a party for voting in the primary is Thursday, Aug. 5, by mail.

Laurel Ridge Health Care Center at 642 Danbury Road reports that a talk on “Preventing Common Sports Injuries and Promoting Bone Health” by Dr. Michael Marks, orthopaedic surgeon of Norwalk Hospital, has been cancelled.
A representative of Laurel Ridge said not enough people signed up for the free lecture.

An improvement plan for Main Street could mean an end to getting stuck behind left turning cars and backed up traffic.
The state’s plans for Route 35 improvements between Governor and Prospect Street is up for a public hearing, tomorrow, Thursday, July 29.
Residents, business owners, and others interested in the state Department of Transportation realignment plan for Main Street, Governor Street and Catoonah can comment tonight at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall conference room.

Bubbleologist Casey Carle will return to the Ridgefield Library with his performance called “Bubble-Mania: Comedy with a Drip!”
The bubble fun will be Thursday, July 29 in the library’s Dayton Program room from 2 to 2:45.
Children will be entertained by science as Casey creates intricate and imaginative bubble art.
The performance is appropriate for children ages four and up.
Younger children are discouraged from attending due to the performer’s requirements.

Tuesday, 4 p.m. — A four-car crash on Route 7, south of Route 35, is jamming up traffic in the area.
One person is reported injured, but not seriously.
The accident is near John's Best Pizza.

Governor M. Jodi Rell said today a statewide “Day of Caring & Compassion” will take place Saturday, July 31, when several fire stations around Connecticut will serve as collection centers for donations of non-perishable food to help replenish the state’s two main food banks.
The nearest to Ridgefield are in Danbury and Westport.
“Saturday will be the day we can all help fill the shelves the shelves of Foodshare and Connecticut Food Bank,” Governor Rell said “Fire departments around the state made our 2009 campaign such a success that we are delighted to have them again this year as partners.

Scores on state tests show Ridgefield students performing better than last year, but with middling results in comparison to peers in other affluent Fairfield County suburbs. Ridgefield students comfortably outperformed statewide averages on test after test.
“We are happy that our students achieve at high levels,” Superintendent Deborah Low commented. “...Our strong scores are a tribute to our faculty, students, and families.”
On two tests for which the state released 2010 results last week — the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT), taken by third through eighth graders, and Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) taken by 10th graders — Ridgefield scores were better this year than last year on 15 of 24 testing areas, and worse on nine.

Using Social Networks is a two hour Ridgefield Continuing Education seminar that will demystify sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn that allow you to connect to and network with other people.
This class will teach what these sites offer, how to set up your accounts, how to promote onesself, and how to join groups and communities.
