Avoiding the injury bug was something the Weston High volleyball team managed to do all through the regular season. It would finally catch up with it for the state Class M tournament.

The Trojans suffered two key injuries at different points of the tournament last week. Compensating for them as best as possible, they got as far at the quarterfinals before losing 3-0 (25-10, 26-24, 5-22) to Sacred Heart Academy in North Haven on Friday, Nov. 13, to end the season.

With only one more game left to play, the Weston High football team will have double the incentive for victory when it hosts Joel Barlow in the season finale against Joel Barlow next week.

The Trojans hope to maintain the upper hand in the annual game, which will be played on Thanksgiving Day, and end the season on a winning note. It will also give them the chance to bounce back after last week’s debacle against Pomperaug.

Despite having back-to-back wins under their belts, the Trojans were in for a rough time against the undefeated Panthers, who will be playing in the South-West Conference championship game this week. Not only did they amass more than 350 yards rushing for the game, they held the Trojans scoreless to win 48-0 in the rain on Senior Night on Friday, Nov. 13.

Having already reached its goal as far as the post-season was concerned, the Weston High girls soccer team may have had not as much motivation for the second round of the state Class M tournament.

The 20th-seeded Trojans had a number of scoring chances when they visited fourth-seeded Valley Regional last Wednesday, Nov. 11. None, however, reached their intended target. All the Warriors needed was to make good on one of theirs to prevail 1-0 and eliminate the Trojans from post-season play.

A tie in a regular season dual meet is an infrequent occurrence in itself. The chance of that happening at a big race is even rarer.

Yet that was what was in store for the Weston High boys cross country team at the State Open on Nov. 6. The Trojans were so evenly matched with Darien that both would finish tied for ninth with 243 points apiece at Wickham Park in Manchester.

In a couple of respects this season’s South-West Conference championship was much like the previous one for the Weston High girls swim team.

Once again the Trojans captured several medals. They even repeated as champs in three events.

A slow start in the first half was erased in the second by the Weston High football team in its game against New Milford.

Led by Robbie Cordisco’s four touchdown runs, the Trojans overcame a six-point halftime deficit to hold off the Green Wave 27-20 last Saturday, Nov. 7. This marked the first back-to-back wins by the team this season.
