A month had passed since the Wilton High field hockey team suffered a 3-0 loss to Darien, and the Warriors were hoping a month of improvement would pay off when the two teams met on Tuesday night in the FCIAC semifinals.
Problem was, the Blue Wave has improved since then as well, and the result was another 3-0 Darien win, at New Canaan High School’s Dunning Field.
“They executed a game plan and we didn’t. Everything they executed was practically textbook,” said Wilton head coach Deirdre Hynes after the game. “They have excellent stick skills. It’s all of them, and they work well together.”
The Warriors (11-4-1) open the Class M state tournament on Tuesday. Pairings will be announced on Friday.

After his team finished second to Fairfield Warde at the conference championships, Wilton High girls cross country coach Jeff Gee got down to some tough love.
“I challenged them to be a better team and pick each other up,” he said. “They were a place or two away from an undefeated season and a second straight FCIAC title. I asked if that was good enough for them or if they wanted to do more.”
Last Saturday afternoon, Gee got his answer.

The odds were overwhelming. New Canaan entered last Friday night’s football game against host Wilton undefeated this season, on a 23-game winning streak, and sporting a roster of 90 players. That collection included a stud transfer quarterback from Florida and an offensive tackle whose listed 6’5 and 300 pounds in the game program was a dwindling of his actual size.
Aligned against these forces of doom stood Wilton with its 2-4 record and a roster of 45 players — long on youth, short on experience and weakened by significant injury.
Yet it was Wilton who drew first blood and led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. And it was the Warriors who blocked an extra-point attempt, leaving the Rams ahead by a manageable 13-6 at 10:05 of the second.

Clare Detrick-Yee's goal 47 seconds in sudden-death overtime gave the Wilton High field hockey team a dramatic 3-2 win over Norwalk in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Friday in Wilton.
The fourth-seeded Warriors (11-3-1) advanced to Tuesday's FCIAC semifinals in New Canaan.
Wilton jumped out quickly with two goals by Julianne Tangney in the opening 2:32 of play. The first was off a penalty corner, just 1:29 into the game, off a Danielle Noonan assist, and the second came on an assist by Amy Drummond.
The fifth-seeded Bears, however, clawed back and had the better of the play for a good deal of the rest of the game.
