Harvey School honors 15

The Harvey School in Katonah has named 15 local students to the honor roll or headmaster’s list for the first marking period of 2009-10. Sixth grade student Lily Alexander of Katonah, freshman Abigail Hassett of Katonah, and seniors Alexander Mark, Rachel Dewar, and William Shearer of Katonah, and Nicole Koppel of Goldens Bridge, have been named to the honor roll. Seventh grade students Marissa Ruschil and Olivia Bady of Katonah and Mark Catanese of Goldens Bridge, eighth grade student Quinn Schoen of Katonah, freshmen Chloe Coletta and Nathanael Alexander of Katonah, sophomore Bryn Seltzer of Katonah, junior Carly Glenn of Katonah, and senior Emily Latainer of Katonah have been named to the headmaster’s list.

   

Lichtenfeld named faculty leader

Dr. Robert Lichtenfeld, former Superintendent of Schools, has been named a faculty leader in the collaboration between the Southern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services and the New York State Superintendent Development Program. Dr. Robert Beuka of the City University of New York visited John Jay High School’s Advanced Placement English classes to conduct Socratic seminars on Monday, Nov. 23. Dr. Beuka’s seminars were designed to give students an idea of how college freshman seminars would be conducted, and tied into the classes’ discussions of The Great Gatsby. His visit was sponsored by ArtsALIVE!, the high school’s arts booster club. Dr. Beuka is the editor of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Society Newsletter.

   

Junie B. Jones on stage to benefit arts

Jones, a musical by TheatreworksUSA based on the books by Barbara Park. The performance will take place on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. at the high school. A decoupage craft activity by Janet's Planet Art of Katonah will follow the performance at 3:15 p.m.

Tickets for the show, which is suitable for children up to fifth grade, are $15 each, and the fourth ticket purchased is free. To reserve: 763-3382. Tickets will also be on sale until one hour before showtime.

The craft workshop requires pre-registration and costs an additional $10.

   

Sposato is a young leader

John Jay High School senior Kelly Sposato of South Salem over the summer participated in the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. and New York City. Kelly had been chosen based on her academic achievements and leadership. At the conference, she interacted with leaders and newsmakers and debated issues such as foreign aid, global warming, space exploration, terrorism, and human rights.

   

Katonah students stack for the record

On Thursday, Nov. 12, the students at Katonah Elementary School took part an annual world record cup-stacking event. The event was part of a world-wide effort to top the World Sport Stacking Association’s record of 81,252 people stacking cups around the world on a single day. In stacking, students attempt to stack cups, designed for the sport, in specific sequences as fast as they can. Students in each grade at Katonah participated in the event, stacking individually and in relays. John Jay High School student Mina Shah and Lewisboro Elementary School teacher Gwen Kopeinig will be readers at the Katonah Museum of Art’s Evening with Walt at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15. Mina, Ms. Kopeinig and other readers from the community will read excerpts from the works of Walt Whitman, Ezra Pound, Langston Hughes, and others. John Jay plays start next week

The fall drama season at John Jay Middle and High School begins next week with the premier of the middle school's You Can't Take It With You, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Moss Hart and George Kaufman. The play will be performed on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 and 7 p.m. at the middle school. Tickets are $5. The following week, high school students will perform Nikolai Gogol's The Government Inspector on Thursday, Nov. 19 and Friday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Information: klschools.org.

Katonah Elementary School's first annual Family Nature Trail Night will be held tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 6 from 4:30 to 6:30. Guests are invited to explore the school's new nature trial, which was designed and built by John Jay High School sophomore adn Eagle Scout candidate Travis Winthers. At 5:30 p.m., storyteller Peter Linz will tell stories in the outdoor amphitheater and classroom, and members of the Katonah Fire Department will build a bonfire. Students celebrate difference day

On Thursday, Nov. 5 at Meadow Pond Elementary School and on Friday, Nov. 6 at Increase Miller Elementary School, second and fifth grade students learned about learning disabilities and other challenges faced by those with special needs at Difference Day. Students rotated through five stations run by the Special Education PTA to learn about speech and language, blindness and visual impairment, hearing impairment, learning differences, and physical disabilities.
