Tyre to speak at middle school on Wednesday

Peg Tyre, author of The Trouble With Boys, will speak at John Jay Middle School Theater on March 17 at 7 p.m. The presentation, which is sponsored by the school PTO, is open to all parents in the community.

Ms. Tyre, a journalist, writer and investigative reporter, will provide an overview of the national debate about why boys are falling behind girls’ achievement in school and not attending college in the same numbers. Ms. Tyre will present her examination of how schools and broader society have changed in ways that shortchange boys and how gender politics is affecting reactions to the statistics. Video games, lack of male role models and other issues contributing to this problem will be discussed as well. She will also discuss possible solutions to the problem and how to help boys without jeopardizing the advances of girls.
