John Jay High School’s Noteables, a student-run a cappella group, placed first at the 11th Annual Youth Committee of Gilda’s Club Westchester A Cappella Extravaganza last weekend. The competition took place on Sunday, April 25, 2010 and was held at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. The group competed against 15 a cappella groups from high schools across Westchester County, including Bronxville, Horace Greeley, Westlake, The Masters School, Rye Country Day School, Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, and Briarcliff. The artists had six minutes to present their songs. The Noteables performed the songs We Are Golden by Mika and Beggin’ by Madcon.
The Noteables have 14 members, led by seniors Elena Pascullo and Grace Hammerstein. The members are seniors Kristen Giles and Rebecca Hirschman; juniors Johanna Lewis, Kathryn Gramigna, Emma Pickett, Emily Feierman, and Natasha Cocullo; sophomores Danielle Schoen and Katy Sackman; and freshmen Lauren Ciubotaru, Nicole Graur, and Sofie Corelli. The students choose and arrange their own music.
More than $1,700 was raised at the event. All the proceeds go to Gilda’s Club Westchester, a non-profit organization which supports people impacted by cancer. Gilda’s Club is named in honor of Saturday Night Live comedian Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.
