Uncommon Sense: Pete, repeat. Pete, repeat.

Last time, I told you about the mess in Albany, and suggested that County Legislator Pete Harckham could provide us with really effective representation in the state Assembly — and give us a fighting chance at straightening out state government.

Normally, I’d let it go at that. But this is a short campaign, with the special election for the 89th Assembly District seat coming up next Tuesday, Feb. 9. So I feel a need to hammer out why it’s important that everyone who knows what a good, decent, effective, fiscally conservative, responsive, independent, ethical, hardworking, spending-cap supporting, reform-minded, forward-thinking representative Mr. Harckham is, actually get out and vote for him next Tuesday.

It’s important because, this being a special election held on short notice in February, odds are not many people are even going to be aware it’s taking place. And with such a small turnout expected, the result will depend on whoever is able to get the most voters to the polls. Unfortunately, that usually means the people with the most anger. The Republicans are counting on a replay of the special election for senator in Massachusetts, and they’ve been pouring money into this race (note that while Mr. Harckham’s mailings say “Paid for by Friends of Pete Harckham,” the Republican candidate’s mailings say “Paid for by New York Republican State Committee”).

One of the clearest indications of the direction the Republicans are going is the push-poll smear campaign they’ve been running. You know what a “push poll” is, right? It’s when you get a call claiming to want your opinion, but then get asked questions that sound sort of like this: “How likely would you be to vote for Pete Harckham if I told you that he was once a member of a violent motorcycle gang?” or, “Would you vote for Pete Harckham if you were told he had been spotted on the grassy knoll in Dallas when President Kennedy was shot?” You’re then given several options to choose from for your answer, “Unlikely” “Not Likely” “Extremely Unlikely” and “Over My Dead Body” being the most likely.

With this being the environment in which we’re living, you can see why I think it’s truly important that everyone who knows what a good, decent, effective, fiscally conservative, responsive, independent, ethical, hardworking, spending-cap supporting, reform-minded, forward-thinking representative Mr. Harckham is, actually get out and vote for him next Tuesday. And speaking of the environment, I’m sure you know how much he’s done to help preserve the quality of our water — not just paying it lip service (which is to be expected with drinking water) but actually securing funding for water protection projects that cost us next to nothing. And that was while he was fighting against increases of millions in county spending and pay raises for county officials — and was successful in doing so, against members of his own party. That’s the kind of leadership we can expect from Mr. Harckham in Albany.

So the point is, this is not a race between an “insider” and an “outsider.” It’s a race that gives us an opportunity to elect someone who has proved himself to be a real reformer, able to work successfully for change from the inside against an entrenched power structure. That’s exactly what we need in order to have any hope of change in the state legislature.

Admittedly, I have a bit of trepidation about endorsing Mr. Harckham, after seeing my endorsements all go down in flames in the last election. I’m going to control the urge to give myself more credit than I’m due, however, and resist assuming my endorsement can single-handedly jinx the electoral outcome. In this case, there are enough people out there who know what a great job Mr. Harckham has done on the county level, and know he is the best choice for the Assembly, that it really comes down to how many of them go out and vote.

That’s why I can’t emphasize strongly enough how important it is that everyone who knows what a good, decent, effective, fiscally conservative, responsive, independent, ethical, hardworking, spending-cap supporting, reform-minded, forward-thinking representative Mr. Harckham is, make it their business to get to the polls next Tuesday. If it’s anger that will motivate you, think how angry you’ll be after the fact if it turns out that he lost because you didn’t show up. Think how angry you’ll be if it turns out that a smear campaign financed outside the district was successful in getting more people to vote than a campaign based on actual accomplishments.

I know that would make me angry. And you do not want to see me angry!

Harchham lied in public that he would vote against the housing settlement. He lied when he ran for County Legislature knowing Adam Bradley was virtually unopposed for Mayor of White Plains. What are you smoking, thinking he is willing to take on Sheldon Silver and get us greater school tax revenues like nassau and suffolk.

According to Bob Castelli's blog, http://castelli2010.wordpress.com/2010/02/03/bad-faith-before-live-cameras/ his campaign is not involved in any "push polling" as described by Jeff Morris. Meanwhile, there are calls being made by an organization called Choice Matters telling those who answer the phone to vote for Pete Harckham because he is "the pro-choice candidate." While Harckham is pro-choice, so is Bob Castelli. The organization is clearly misleading those they are calling (which is a list people who have donated to related causes) by implying that Castelli is not pro-choice.

Shadow...calling people "liars" is not needed in such a small town as ours. You want to touch on issues, please do, but personal attacks make the very best people unwilling to run and our nation needs them more than ever.

It's really amusing that folks, including Bob Castelli himself, are claiming that "his campaign" is not involved in any push polling. Well, "his campaign" is not involved in any campaign mailings either; they're all financed by either the State or County Republican committees. The money that's pouring into his campaign from outside the district is clearly huge -- and the amounts can't be determined, because they're not disclosed under the Castelli campaign. But to expect us to believe this is all going on without his knowledge? Come on!

As for Castelli being pro-choice, according to Planned Parenthood, "Robert Castelli (R) has been listed as a Mixed candidate (Mixed candidates support certain restrictions on reproductive health options)." Which is why they endorsed Harckham.

Mr. Castelli's position on abortion is where many Americans are--either "pro-abortion with exceptions" or "pro-life with exceptions." Either way you frame it, that means something much less than publicly funded abortion on demand.

Jeff, I'm curious, were you personally "push polled?" What was it that the caller asked?

Meanwhile, it was not Planned Parenthood who made the calls to which I am referring, it is an organization called Choice Matters/Westchester Coalition of Abortion Rights. There is no question that their initial call was misleading and when called back for clarification, they agreed that Bob Castelli is indeed pro-choice but because he does not necessarily agree that it should be funded by the government, they think Pete Harckham is "the abortion leader" in this race.

If anyone would like to call Choice Matters themselves, their url is www.choicematters.org and their contact info is available there.

As for Pete Harckham, I've met him and he seems like a very decent guy but his record does not support the claims you are making on his behalf.

I may have been called, but since I routinely do not answer any calls with a Caller ID I don't know (and most don't leave any message) I have no way of knowing. However, I was told of the nature and substance of the calls independently by at least two people who had received such calls -- in addition to hearing about them from the Harckham campaign. So I have no reason to doubt they were made.

It's possible I was called by Choice Matters as well, but again, if I was I didn't answer (probably the wisest choice). I would condemn them too, but misleading about a single cloudy position is not on the same level of dirty tricks with deliberately engaging in character assassination in the guise of asking objective questions.

Anyway, as Bob Kesten says, this argument is going nowhere. Especially when all the positives in Harckham's record just elicit questioning of his motives, while evidence of Republican dirty tricks is regarded as something that's been made up.

Well, something is going nowhere, but I'm afraid it's not this discussion, which is actually quite revealing of the state of the Harckham campaign.

Your "evidence" of "Republican dirty tricks" consists of the following: (1) You heard that somebody else got "such calls" and (2) The Harckham campaign, bereft of ideas and worried that its ersatz Sarah Palin riff is a flop, is desperately accusing its opponent of dirty tricks.

I smell panic in the Democratic ranks.

rtk212: Integrity in politics needs to be a litmus test given the plight of government at all levels. Pete Harckham said he would vote against the housing settlement at a public gathering, then voted for it for Andy Spano's suppor for Assembly. That is a toatl lack of integrity. When he ran for County Legislature, we rightfullty expected him to represent us for the term, unlike national politicians, his loyalty should be to his neighbors. Now, either we are unrepresented or have to pay for another election-governing is choosing as you said a few weeks ago, Pete Harckham wants it every way for himself!
