To the Editors:
New York Gov. David Paterson has designated Oct. 19 to 23 as school board recognition week. We join the governor and take this occasion to thank the men and women who dedicate themselves to service as board of education members on the Bedford School District and Katonah-Lewisboro School District boards of education. In many ways, service as school board members represents one of the most important elected government positions in our American democracy. Decisions made by boards of education affect the future of our nation. Graduates of our schools go on to represent nearly every profession — and some even become government leaders. In these challenging fiscal times, we are particularly grateful that we have women and men who are willing to step up to become elected board members. Once elected, they dedicate themselves to numerous hours each month attending meetings, numerous hours preparing for meetings, and numerous hours studying and learning together. In the end, board members make very difficult decisions which are sometimes subject to criticism, yet almost always contribute to the future of our young people, their communities and our nation.
As superintendents who believe strongly in American public education, we are grateful to the board of education members who volunteer to serve our respective school districts. We invite our entire school communities to join us in saying thank you to our board of education trustees, individually, and as our governance teams.
