Taxes are too high

To the Editors:

As a Katonah-Lewisboro School District resident and parent of a John Jay High School student, I must express my dismay that in these difficult economic times we are considering spending the capital reserve fund on developing athletic fields. This is not, in my mind, the best use of our limited financial resources. We should be concentrating on core education, infrastructure, and safety issues, current and future, and not on athletics.

I am quite alarmed at the idea that we should use the reserve fund for the fields and then raise taxes for future projects. We can’t count on raising taxes again — the tax rate in our community is already unsustainably high and needs to come down. Many families in our community are suffering from decreased income or job loss and can’t afford the taxes now, let alone a tax increase. We need a more responsible spending policy in our school district.
