The adage, ‘It ain’t over ‘til it’s over,” held true for Charles Bocklet of Waccabuc and his skipper, Harry Koeppel, at the recent qualifier for the youth sailing world championships.
The team was making its first appearance at the qualifying regatta, which determines who will be the U.S. representatives at this summer’s International Sailing Federation’s Youth World Championships. The regatta, held at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, CA., over the Martin Luther King Day weekend, featured the best junior sailors in the country.

After a enormously successful senior season with the John Jay football team, it would be hard to see how Ryan Sanders could ask for anything more.
Except for the chance to continue playing on the collegiate level.
That became a reality last Friday, when the Indians’ standout lineman signed his National Letter of Intent to play football next fall at Lafayette College, a Division 1 program that plays in the Patriot League.
“I chose Lafayette because of its great academics and really nice football facilities. Although the part that made Lafayette stand out was its very good engineering program, and that is what I want to major in,” commented Sanders, who was also considering Marist College, Muhlenberg College, and Ithaca College.

With only 14 swimmers, the combined boys swim and dive team from Brewster and John Jay knew it had to make up for a lack of depth by scoring high finishes at last Saturday’s Section 1 Division 1 championships at Peekskill.
The team did just that, with 17 top-six finishes in 12 events, and placed third at the meet out of nine teams.
“One more first-place finish would have swung it and we would have won,” said coach Claire Carr, whose team took three second places — including the 100-yard butterfly where Charlie Carr had a state-qualifying time but was just touched out by Arlington’s Chris Alpay.

Mahopac outscored the John Jay boys basketball team 28-12 in the third quarter to erase a six-point halftime deficit, and then held off a furious John Jay rally in the final minutes to post a 70-67 win on Tuesday night in Cross River.
John Jay’s active zone held Mahopac to only 23 points in the first half, but the visitors found their range in the third quarter, hitting 10 of 16 shots to take a 53-45 lead.
The lead grew to 12 points with just over two minutes left to play, when John Jay clawed back to cut the deficit to three points, 68-65, with 42 seconds after a pair of free throw by Jack Paccione.

Jack Grimm’s goal with 3:07 left to play gave the John Jay hockey team a thrilling 4-3 win over Yorktown last Friday at Brewster Ice Arena.
Despite a 22-3 advantage in shots on goal over the first two periods, the Indians (12-4) entered the third period in a 2-2 tie. The Huskers had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but John Jay tied the game twice on Dan Killea’s goal late in the first period and Shawn Smith’s goal late in the second period.
