The John Jay volleyball team will play for the Section 1 Class A championship on Friday night, after the Indians swept Tappan Zee, 3-0, in Wednesday's semifinals at John Jay.
The second-seeded Indians (11-7) will take on top-seeded Fox Lane on Friday at 6 p.m. at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose. The Foxes (14-3) swept Beacon on Wednesday, 3-0.
Fox Lane beat John Jay in both regular-season meetings by scores of 3-0, but John Jay head coach Tom Rizzotti is hoping his team has taken away some lessons from those defeats."They say that it's hard to beat a team three times in a year," he said after Wednesday's win. "I think we learned a lot from our two losses to them. They're a phenomenal team. We're hoping to build off the two losses to them earlier in the year, and fixing the mistakes, and coming away as the victor this time."
In the win over 11th-seeded Tappan Zee (4-12), the Indians won by scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-19.
Cathy Kulick has seven kills to lead the attack, while Mackenzie Samet had four kills and Alexis Ring and Tess Lowth each had three kills. Tori Smith, Angel Gray and Bethany each had two kills.
Claire Morrell finished with 19 assists, while Kylee Harris had six assists.
Olivia Ferreiro had 14 digs, Lowth had 12 digs and Paige Bennett had 11 digs. Christie had eight digs, and Morrell, Kulick and Reagan Knox each had three digs.
John Jay had 14 aces, with Morrell leading the way with five aces and Lowth having three aces. Christie had two aces and Gray, Harris, Samet and Knox each had one ace.
