What should have happened did occur when fourth-seeded Foran High played host to 13th-seeded Platt of Meriden in a Class L state tournament second round game at the Edna Fraser Gymnasium on Thursday night.

The Lion passes from the back row were crisp all night, Sage Esposito took advantage to garner 31 assists, and the Lions rolled to a 3-0 victory behind the hitting of Nicole Weichner, Carli Matrisian and Melissa Manning.

The Lauralton Hall soccer team’s 2009 season ended the same way its 2008 season did, with a loss to St. Joseph High of Trumbull in Class M state tournament.

The second-seeded Crusaders suffered a 2-0 defeat to the visiting No. 10 seed Cadets on Monday afternoon in the Class M quarterfinals in Milford, drawing the curtain on their campaign.

Being almost perfect wasn’t good enough on the scoreboard when Foran High played host to Branford High in an SCC interdivisional football game at the Vito DeVito Sports Complex on Friday night.

But Lion coach Jeff Bevino, through his words and actions, conveyed that his player’s performance was good enough for him following Foran’s 21-20 double-bolt of disappointing loss to Branford.

The Foran High and Jonathan Law boys soccer teams battled to a 2-2 draw in both sides regular season finale at the Vito DeVito Sports Complex.

Trailing twice by a goal, the Lawmen got two equalizers, one from Chris Peloso and the other from Nicholas DePascale, with just over seven minutes left in the second frame of extra time, to salvage the tie in a card-filled Southern Connecticut Conference Hammonasset Division contest between the cross-town rivals.

   

Penalty kicks decide SWC title

For the first time in league history, the South-West Conference chose to use penalty kicks to decide its girls soccer league champion.

When 100 minutes of back-and-forth play between top-seeded Lauralton Hall and third-seeded Masuk High produced a 1-1 draw, the teams went into penalty kicks instead of each side being declared a co-champion as in year’s past.

The Jonathan Law High girls volleyball team entered the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament seeded third and looking for its first league title since 2006.

After breezing into the finals with a 3-0 win over sixth-seeded East Haven High and a 3-1 semifinal victory over seventh-seeded Mercy High of Middletown, the Eagles met a familiar opponent in Cheshire High on Saturday night.

   

Pop Warner Midgets edged in Bob Boss final

The Milford Midgets bid for a Bob Boss Pop Warner football championship came down to the last play of the game.

Milford had the ball on Bridgeport’s 18-yard line with four seconds left trailing, 19-18.

Tyler Kasuba dropped back to pass looking for someone deep in the end zone and tried to scramble away from pressure, but eventually was sacked in a thrilling game.

   

Liontas leads Lions, Pardis best Lawman

Alex Liontas from Foran High placed eighth overall and Jonathan Law’s Peter Paradis was 12th to lead their respective boys country teams at the Class M championships at Wickham Park in East Hartford on Oct. 31.

Liontas’ time of 17:39 led the Lions, who finished 11th as a team in the division won by Tolland High.

Junior quarterback Tucker Schumitz raced his way for 262 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, as Foran High’s football team defeated Sheehan High, 28-7, in a Southern Connecticut Conference Division II East contest at Riccitelli Field in Wallingford on Oct. 30.

It was the second straight win for coach Jeff Bevino’s Lions, who improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the division.

The victory keeps Foran in the mix for a potential Class SS state playoff berth, as well as for a possible share of the Division II East title.

   

Foran falls to Guilford in SCC quarterfinals

The Foran High girls volleyball team qualified for the Southern Connecticut Conference tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2004 by winning 16 of 18 regular-season matches.

Twice the Lions defeated SCC Hammonasset rivals Guilford High during the season and the two teams met again in the quarterfinals of the SCC tournament on Monday afternoon in Milford.

Round three went to the fifth-seeded Indians, who upset the fourth-seeded Lions in three games at Edna Fraser Gymnasium to punch their tickets to the semifinals on Nov. 5.
