Republican First Selectman Stephen J. Vavrek won a resounding victory Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Phyllis Kansky by 64% to 36%. The vote totals were 2,684-1,519.
“I’m humbled by this,” Vavrek said while celebrating with supporters at the Grill at Whitney Farms.

Phyllis Kansky said her 36 years working in the public sector — including 30 of them in Monroe town government— have prepared her to be first selectman. “I have the qualifications and experience,” Kansky said. “I’m dedicated to this town and want to see it prosper.”

Stephen J. Vavrek likes to tell people that being Monroe first selectman for the past two years has been the best job he has ever had. “I really enjoy it,” Vavrek said. “I enjoy coming to work every day, with a great staff and a great community.”

Candidates are listed by party (Democrats first due to holding the governor’s seat) and then by alphabetical order, not necessarily in the order they will appear on the ballot.

While Monroe has long been a small suburban community that is run in a lean, efficient manner, it’s obvious a lot of problems had been put off. The main reason for this may be the town’s budget referendum form of government, which can make it difficult to generate the revenue needed to think long term.

All candidates for municipal office other than those running for first selectman were invited to submit a combined 150-word biography and statement to The Monroe Courier for publication.
