The Monroe Lions’ fourth-grade football team dismantled the previously-unbeaten Bristol Bulldogs, 31-7, at Brien McMahon High on Saturday to capture the state championship of American Youth Football.

The Masuk Panthers are on a mission and it showed big time on Saturday night in Stratford.

In a South-West Conference football game originally scheduled in Monroe, weather forced coach John Murphy’s team on the road to take on the Bunnell Bulldogs.

Masuk wanted no part of any last minute heroics.

Powered by senior captain Amanda Snajder’s goal in the 42nd minute, the Masuk High girls soccer team marched on in the Class L tournament by eliminating Naugatuck on Friday afternoon.

Snajder, one of the 10th-seeded Panthers three remaining healthy seniors, notched the lone goal of the game in a 1-0 triumph over the second-seeded Greyhounds at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.

   

Lions batter Mahopec to win Candlewood

The Monroe Lions fourth-grade football team took on the Mahopac Indians on Saturday at Brien McMahon High in Norwalk and came away with the Candlewood Valley League championship, winning 37-7.

The Lions’ record now stands a perfect 10-0 and sends them into the state championship game this weekend.

   

Saia, Panthers punch ticket to second round

The Masuk High boys soccer team advanced to the second round of the Class LL state tournament on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Cheshire High, 2-0, at Benedict Field.

Mike Saia netted both goals for the 16th-seeded Panthers, scoring twice in the second half to eliminate the No. 17 Rams.

For the first time in league history, the South-West Conference decided to use penalty kicks to decide its girls soccer league champion.

When 100 minutes of back-and-forth play between top-seeded Lauralton Hall and third-seeded Masuk High produced a 1-1 draw, the teams went into penalty kicks instead of each side being declared a co-champion as in year’s past.

The Monroe Lions fourth-grade football team opened the Candlewood Valley League playoffs with a convincing 33-0 win over the Aspetuck Wildcats.

   

Unbeaten Panthers blow by Brookfield

Last year, the Brookfield High football team handed Masuk its only loss of the season and prevented the Panthers from playing in the South-West Conference title game.

Masuk avenged that loss on Friday night, pinning a 42-0 defeat on the Bobcats in a South-West Conference Colonial Division matchup to improve to 7-0.

   

DeVita sets school diving record

Masuk High diver Katelyn DeVita popped out of the water after a well-executed inward 1 1⁄2 to see three impressed judges and hear an ovation from both the stands above the pool and her teammates on the edge of the pool.

The senior was awarded 42 points on that dive alone and finished the Panthers’ meet with Newtown High with a school record total of 217.65 on Oct. 28.

   

AYF Lions beat Norwalk

The Monroe Lions fourth-grade football team marched into Norwalk on Saturday and came away with a rain-soaked 33-12 victory to finish the regular season a perfect 8-0.

In a game played in a steady and driving rain, the Lions showed they can run their varied offensive sets despite difficult conditions.
