Monroe opened the game on defense and forced Aspetuck into a punting situation on fourth down. The snap sailed over the head of the Wildcat punter and was recovered at the Wildcat two-yard line.
On the first play for the Lions, fullback Peter Cosmedy stormed into the end zone for the Lions’ first score of the day and an early 6-0 lead. The Lions converted the extra point on a sweep around right end by Ryan Shaw to make it 7-0.
Monroe once again stopped Aspetuck on its next possession, forcing a punt.
The Lions executed a reverse on the punt return, as Mickey Zuk received the punt, raced left and handed the ball to David Allan.
Allan eluded several Wildcat tacklers and raced into the end zone for what appeared to be a Lion touchdown. But, a clipping penalty brought the ball back to midfield.
Monroe’s high-powered offense took over from there, as Max Szabo took a handoff from Hersch and raced around left end 35 yards for a touchdown. The extra point try failed and the Lions led 13-0.
The Lions’ defense did not allow Aspetuck’s offense to get on track, as linebackers Mike Fedorko and Jack Duignan, along with Nick Lebinski, TJ Scalia, Sam Nalaboff and Cosmedy controlled the middle.
Curtis Swain, Benji Vickowski, Tyler Michalka, Mickey Zuk and Szabo held down the outside attack of the Wildcats, frustrating their offense all day.
Late in the second quarter, Monroe added to its lead.
Quarterback Matt Hersch connected with Zuk for a 15-yard touchdown pass, then tossed a short pass to Vickowski for the extra point to give the Lions a 20-0 advantage heading into the half.
The Lions’ defense picked up where it left off in the first half as Aspetuck tried to go to a passing attack, but pressure on the Wildcat quarterback resulted in two interceptions by Szabo.
The second interception was nearly returned for a score but Szabo was stopped inside the Aspetuck five. From there, the Lions would get their 20th player into the end zone on the season, as Sam Nalaboff charged in for his first touchdown of the season.
Chris Nicolia would join Nalaboff as newcomers into the Lions’ touchdown club when he followed a wall of Lions offensive lineman across the goal line for Monroe’s final score on the day.
“What this means is we get to spend another three days together in practice this week, so I’m happy about that,” Lions’ coach Steve Christy said.
Monroe plays for the Candlewood Valley League title on Saturday at McMahon High in Norwalk at 9 a.m.
