Preparations for New Canaan Cares 20th Annual Kitchen and Home Tour are well underway. This year’s tour will be held on Thursday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature “some of the most beautiful kitchens and homes in New Canaan,” according to event chair Joni Schaefer. The tour is the organization’s largest fund-raiser of the year and all proceeds directly support Cares health education and leadership programming.

“We are fortunate to have such a wonderful array of properties and design elements on the tour this year,” Schaefer said. “Tour homes range from new construction to thoughtful renovations and represent the pinnacle in quality construction and design. Some specific trends to watch for include the evolution of living rooms into adult family rooms, the addition of porches and pergolas to extend living spaces outdoors, and the incorporation of creative cabinetry and specialized appliances to maximize kitchen functionality.”

For families in town who choose not to send their child to a private or boarding school for their high school years, New Canaan High School is a pretty good alternative — after all, the town has been ranked No. 1 for education by Connecticut Magazine two years in a row, and the high school consistently ranks high nationally. For the students in the ABC (A Better Chance) Program in New Canaan, our high school is, in fact, a de facto boarding school.

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, New Canaan resident Rich Bond, owner of Westport-based Bond & Company Executive Recruiting and Search, spoke to the Wharton Alumni Club of New York on “How to Impress a Recruiter.” He was joined by Josh Friedlander, who is chief human resources officer for Latham & Watkins LLP, of N.Y.

“A lot of the information that is out there is misinformation,” said Bond. “Most people who are looking for a job don’t realize that the people doing the hiring are motivated by self-interest, or what I call ‘WIIFM’ — ‘What’s In It For Me?’ To be a success, you need to show how you solve the problem the hiring manager has.”

St. Mark’s Nursery School recently welcomed retired teacher Nellie Chang back to lead a lesson on Chinese New Year. A teacher at SMNS for 17 years, Chang continued her tradition of introducing this cultural celebration to the preschoolers through a variety of demonstrations and hands-on activities, including reading a story about Chinese culture and new year celebrations. The students also played with Chinese lanterns and noisemakers, and even painted their version of Chinese symbols with authentic writing brushes. Above, Chang holds up a traditional Chinese lantern, while Sadie Harris and Katharine Bernhard describe its artwork.

An autographed painting of “Spider Man” from an original comic book; two framed Listerine mouthwash advertisements from 1925; a bolt of bright fabric. These are but a few of the more unusual items for sale at the new consignment store in town — JL Consignment — which opened in late December 2011 at 5 East Street, next to Canaan Nails.

The New Canaan location represents the third JL Consignment store in the area, with one on Westport Avenue in Norwalk, and the other on Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich, all owned by Janet Lee, also of Greenwich.

Just like a lot of new-to-New-Canaan business owners, Lee decided to open a store here because she “really likes the town and thought it would be a good space,” according to store manager Sherry Wyatt.
