The New Canaan Nature Center is an environmental education center and sanctuary dedicated to helping people of all ages better understand, appreciate and care for the world of nature. The New Canaan Nature Center’s grounds are open from dawn to dusk daily. The visitor’s center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Parent’s Night Out/Nature’s Night In, 6 to 9 p.m. Celebrate the end of the week with an “adults-only” night out while kids participate in an educational bee-themed evening at the Nature Center.
Nature Center educators and volunteer Red Cross-trained baby-sitters will provide care, interaction and activities for children 18 months to ten years old. Infants will be cared for in a quiet environment with a variety of nature-based activities, while older children will have an evening of live animal visits, outside activities and a short nature video. Bring blankets and pillows.
The cost for members is $25 for the first child and $15 for additional siblings and, for non-members, $35 for the first child and $15 for additional siblings.
Starry Sky Campfire with Matt Black, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Matt Black, long-time summer camp director at the Nature Center, returns for a special performance at the last campfire of the summer. He will sing some of the center’s most popular songs, and once the sun sets the group will have an opportunity to learn about the constellations and roast marshmallows beside the campfire.
The cost for members is $8 per person or $25 per family, up to five members and, for non-members, $11 per person or $35 per family, up to five members.
The Fall/Winter session Nurturing Nature, for children 18 months to three years, creates an opportunity for parents and children to explore and discover the natural world. Activities will include encounters with animals, art projects, “tail walks,” stories and simple experimentation.
The fees are $340 for one-hour classes, 18 months to two-and-a-half years, for a 14-week session, and $460 for one-and-a-half hour classes, ages two to three, for a 14-week session.
