Residents sweep Silvermine

New Canaan locals beat out New York and fellow Connecticut residents to take home several awards for their artwork, which is displayed in the 19th annual Juried Student Exhibition at the Silvermine Guild Arts Center.

The recent exhibit showcases works completed by students of all ages, youths and adults, and will run through August 23.

Judged by Professor Jon Walker, chair of the Department of Art and Design at Sacred Heart University, New Canaan’s Wendy Hower, Connie Nichols, Anne Osso Porco, Maia Zonis, Audrey Bloom and Dylan Wietfeldt received prizes at the July 26 opening reception. “What makes this exhibit so unique and different from others is the opportunity for friends and family to share in recognizing the hard work and achievements of each of the award winners,” said Anne Connell, Silvermine school director.

In the adult group, Hower received first prize for her ceramic work, “Three Sisters.”

Connie Nichols and Anne Porco earned honorable mentions for Connie’s raku “You’re in my Head” and Porco’s charcoal drawing “Diane.”

In the five- to 10-year-old group, Maia Zonis, 9, took home first prize for her mixed media piece “Dreaming of Dog.” Audrey Bloom, 6, and Dylan Wietfeldt, 8, achieved honorable mentions for “Rudy” and “Tree Frog,” respectively.

The Silvermine Guild Arts Center, one of the oldest artist communities in the country, offers more than 20 contemporary and historic exhibitions annually and a wide range of art courses and workshops on its four-acre campus.

Registration for the fall semester begins August 10, and courses start on September 14.
