Residents race for hospital

New Canaan did not go unnoticed last month in the 14th annual Hope in Motion Walk, Run & Ride to benefit Stamford Hospital’s Bennett Cancer Center.

With 12 corporate sponsors, numerous teams and 435 participants, the town amassed about $110,000 for the June 7 event at Stamford’s Columbus Park.

Since 1966, the walk has raised more than $7 million worth of funds for the support and treatment of the Stamford Hospital patients

Two New Canaan teams ranked among the top three fund raisers, including Ned Burns’s “Living the Dream” team and Alex Tuff’s “Team Toddlers,” producing close to $30,000 in support of the Bennett Cancer Center’s patient services. New Canaan’s Nick Risom’s “Wheels of Hope” team also rose to the occasion, collecting close to $24,000.

New Canaan’s Hope Krause won the 5K Run in 18:13, becoming the first female to ever win the race at a Hope in Motion event. Running as a member of team “Leadership in Motion,” Krause raised $195, and her team brought in close to $12,000.

Other New Canaan participants included Sherman Bull, Chris Carey, Lloyd O’Connor, Nancy Gould, John Hutchins and Richard Knight.

“Thanks to the strong turnout of residents from New Canaan and other local towns, we were able to match last year’s fund-raising efforts,” said event chair John Risom. “As a resident of New Canaan, I was proud to see that the town was once again a strong supporter of this important event.”

The event includesd a 5K run, 3K walk and 50 mile ride for adults and children.

Both routes began in Stamford, went through Westchester County and circled back to downtown.

Upon completing the walk, participants, volunteers and friends celebrated with food, drinks and live music.

Magical Music for Life, a New Canaan-based children’s choir, performed and area restaurants ran promotions for participants.

The Stamford Hospital Foundation will accept donations until September 30.
