Bank hosts seminar with expert

As part of an ongoing effort to provide educational value to the community, The Bank of New Canaan will host a seminar on “How to Pay for College” from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 3, at 208 Elm Street. The seminar will be presented by college funding expert Charles Wareham of LPL Financial, who will speak about college funding strategies and financial aid options.

Wareham will discuss how the financial aid system works, what types of assistance are available and what aid families can reasonably expect to see. He will discuss not only the traditional methods of funding college but also a number of creative ones. He will also cover various tips and pitfalls related to common college savings plans such as 529s, EE bonds and UGMA accounts, and will discuss how the economic meltdown has affected college investments and tuition costs, and what can be done about it going forward.

Wareham has been a financial adviser since 1992. He provides presentations at high schools throughout Connecticut and works on an individual basis with families trying to best position themselves to qualify for financial aid.

This year, there have been a number of changes to the financial aid system under the new Obama administration, and it’s important that parents are aware of not only the changes, but how to actually access the financial aid they need, a press release said.
