Y strengthens special needs with new coordinator

Marisa McBride has joined the New Canaan YMCA in the newly created position of special needs coordinator.

“It is the YMCA’s vision to be a premier provider of recreational programming and services for those with special needs in our community,” said Executive Director Craig Panzano. “We want the YMCA to be a place where the entire family can belong, participate, and stay well — spirit, mind, and body.”

In her role, McBride will work to facilitate the inclusion of children and adults with special needs into YMCA programming. She will also oversee the YMCA’s Special Cares summer camp program.

A Trumbull native, McBride earned her bachelor of arts degree in child life, pediatric health and illness from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where she graduated cum laude.

She has five years of experience planning and facilitating programs for both medically fragile and healthy children and their families. Prior to joining the New Canaan Y, McBride was a teacher in Charlotte, N.C. She also worked for several years at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, Paul Newman’s camp in Ashford for children living with chronic and terminal illnesses, where she continues to volunteer.

The New Canaan YMCA offers mainstream programming for all members of the community and makes special accommodations and adaptations where need exists, according to a press release. In addition, the Y has developed a series of “Stepping Stone” programs in specific areas, such as aquatics, wellness, and arts and humanities.

“These specialized programs are not intended to replace participation in our traditional programs,” said McBride, “but are designed to introduce participants to a Y program and allow him or her to develop a level of comfort to facilitate success in mainstream programming.”

While these programs are designed with the special needs population in mind, all members, regardless of ability, are welcome to participate.

“It is an honor to be part of such an incredible organization dedicated to the success and well-being of all individuals in the community,” Mc Bride added. “The mission and vision of the YMCA are upheld to the fullest each day, pushing us to expand our programs and put our children first, regardless of need or ability. I look forward to playing a role in this great endeavor.”
