Nancy Stone Bernard, founder and director of Archeological Associates of Greenwich, will speak to members of the New Canaan branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, November 12, at Waveny House. AAUW’s year-long series is devoted to women in non-traditional careers and Stone’s topic will be “Digging for the Past.”Stone is an author, lecturer and consultant in archeology and pre-history. She graduated from Stanford University and pursued graduate studies at Los Angeles State College. She interned at the Museum of Cultural History at UCLA and served as a research associate at the UCLA Institute of Archeology.
Stone has co-authored three books for Oxford University Press, and is an advisory board member and frequent contributor to Dig magazine. She has been an instructor in Old World archeology at Boston University, Norwalk Community College, Greenwich Public Schools and the Bruce Museum, as well as an adjunct professor at Fairfield University and the University of Bridgeport. Stone has also organized and been a tour leader of archeology-related travel groups to Sicily, Malta, France, Scotland, northern England, Ireland and Wales. She was co-leader of the UCLA Institute of Archeology project in Greece at the Neolithic sites of Chaeroneia and Lithares in Boetoia and Thessaly in 1988.
