‘Bagdad Café’ is topic of film discussion

The New Canaan Library’s film discussions series, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, continues with “Bagdad Café,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 19. As part of “The Actors Series,” the selected film will not be screened in its entirety, though excerpts may be shown. Multiple copies of the DVD will be available at the library for check out and reserves.

“Bagdad Café” is a West German film featuring actress Marianne Sagebrecht as a Bavarian tourist who is stranded in the Mojave Desert after a quarrel with her husband. She ends up stopping at the Bagdad Café, magnet for odd and eccentric characters including a temperamental Hispanic cook, a tattoo artist and a onetime Hollywood set designer played by Jack Palance. The cafe is operated by by the outspoken C.C.H Pounder, who is also having troubles with her husband. Despite their personality differences, a friendship develops between the two women.

The discussion will take place in the Plaut Room and is free and open to the public. Pizza and refreshments will be served.

The series concludes on January 21 with “Coffee and Cigarettes” starring Cate Blanchett.
