Nature center educates locals about back yard birds

The New Canaan Nature Center will host a program for anyone interested in learning more about the birds in their back yards from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, November 21 at the center.

Local birding expert Luke Tiller will educate participants about what types of birds are migrating and what can be done to help them make it through the cold months ahead. He will cover topics including how to identify wintering yard birds, what type of food attracts different birds and where to place bird feeders, according to a press release.

Tiller sits on the board of the Connecticut Ornithological Association, is Audubon Greenwich’s official hawkwatcher for the 2009 season and is a tour leader for Sunrise Birding, a natural history tours company based in Branford that leads trips locally, nationally and around the globe.

The nature center group will also have a guided tour of the grounds, for hands-on bird identification and observing different types of feeders. Attendees are encouraged to bring binoculars, but the center will also make them available.

Materials and guidance will also be supplied to build a bird house to take home, for a fee of $15.

This program is for ages 12 and older. The cost of the program is $10 for nature center members and $15 for non-members. For more information or to register, call 203-966-9577.
