Series book explores religion

Julian Padowicz of Stamford, author of “A Ship in the Harbor,” will discuss his new book at the New Canaan Library at 7:30 p.m. Monday, November 23, in the Adrian Lamb Room as part of the Authors on Stage series, co-sponsored by Elm Street Books.

Padowicz’s latest book continues from where his 2006 memoir, “Mother and Me: Escape from Warsaw 1939,” left off. In the memoir, Padowicz described his confusion in being brought up as a “Polish Jew-hater” by a Catholic governess who was forced to leave him with his socialite mother Barbara after the Nazis bombed Warsaw, according to a press release from the library.

As a Jew raised in the Catholic faith by his governess, Padowicz eventually made a dramatic escape with his mother, making the journey across the Carpathian mountains after being abandoned by a treacherous guide.

“A Ship in the Harbor” continues in Hungary, where Barbara is embraced by her large social circle and believes herself to be saved. There, she attempts to sell her jewelry and becomes the mistress of a wealthy Russian count, hiding in his country estate.

Padowicz’s latest book explores the bonds between mothers and sons, loyalty and deceit and faith and treachery.

Padowicz has a degree in English from Colgate University. He has won a Golden Eagle Award for his educational film, “The People Shop,” from the Committee on International Non-Theatrical Events.
