Modern house tour draws crowd

The recent open house for New Canaan Moderns drew an unprecedented number of visitors, according to Bill Larkin, manager of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty of New Canaan, which sponsored the tour. More than 200 people from New Canaan, as well as other Fairfield County towns, Westchester County and New York City, attended the four open houses held.

Included in the tour were a Philip Johnson house designed for Alice Ball; two homes inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright: the Hemicycle House designed by John Howe, his top apprentice at Taliesin known as “the pencil in Wright’s hand,” and a house designed by Cuban architect Eduardo Faxas, a disciple of Wright who worked with Eliot Noyes of the Harvard Five in New Canaan during the l960s. The fourth house was a contemporary townhouse in the heart of New Canaan, built by David Prutting in collaboration with architect Joeb Moore. All four homes are currently on the market.

With public interest in New Canaan’s architectural heritage of “Moderns” and contemporaries sparked, a press release said, more special educational events are planned. Under consideration is a “Meet the Architects” event in early 2010.

“We’d like to keep the dialogue going while the interest is keen,” Larkin said.
