Nature center recruits members

A membership drive is underway at the New Canaan Nature Center. The not-for-profit environmental education center and sanctuary has been a part of the New Canaan community for almost 50 years.

The 40-acre site features one of the largest remaining tracts of open land in New Canaan with diverse habitats, wildlife and a staff of naturalists who run programs and special events throughout the year. While the grounds and trails are free and open to the public, membership dues provide support for operating expenses such as maintaining the trails and facilities, animal care and program and staff development.

Laura Heckman, executive director of the nature center, has worked with the staff to develop new programs and services that members can take advantage of. These include free or discounted participation in many events and programs, a free soil testing and evaluation program and the use of “Nature Activity Packs” when visiting the property. These backpacks contain tools and instructions for seasonal activities such as bug collection and identification, pond exploration, birding or a scavenger hunt. A popular new benefit added this year allows members early access to the Fall Fair.

“It’s really our members that make the nature center the special place that it is,” said Heckman.

“We’ve listened and worked hard to provide more benefits to this group, and have developed new programs and events such as our Green Book Club, Yinyasa Yoga Classes and Adopt-A-Maple-Tree program that have involved a new constituency,” she said.

Annual memberships range from a $55 family membership to the $500 benefactor level. A $35 individual membership is also available. From now through January 15, members who join at the Supporter level of $100, will receive a free 2010 Iblast card, a $30 value, along with a special gift such as a reusable tote bag or water bottle.

Gift memberships are also available. Any gift memberships purchased at the family level or above before January 15, will be delivered to the recipient in a tote bag with a special gift, membership materials and personal message.

Heckman, the board and staff are actively involved in this membership drive and hope that the community will respond and help the nature center meet their goal, a press release said.

A new membership board and “tree” have been constructed in the Visitor’s Center, where progress will be tracked and the names of new members will be hung on the branches.
