Market celebrates holidays with donations and raffle

This week, Peter Lewis’s red Christmas stocking, bulging with toys, was hung for the 32nd consecutive year at Walter Stewart’s Market.

While the store’s youngest shoppers are entering the contest for a chance to win its contents, their parents are donating T-Bill points to their favorite local charities during Walter Stewart’s annual Holiday Donation Days fund-raising drive running through Saturday, December 19. Shoppers may enter the contest at the store. The winner will be chosen on December 21.

“Peter’s Stocking and our Holiday Donation Days T-Bill charity drive are two long-standing traditions that give us a chance to give back to our community, which has supported us since 1907. They really highlight the holidays at Walter Stewart’s,” said Alex Stewart, store manager and great-grandson of the family-owned company’s founder.

Since 1978, “Peter’s Stocking” has been a favorite holiday project for Peter Lewis. Lewis joined the Stewart’s staff 36 years ago when a staff member recommended him to company president, Bailey Stewart.

“Peter truly cherished his job, New Canaan and the people he served,” Stewart said. “For some time now, Peter has suffered serious medical setbacks and is receiving great care at Waveny Care Center. So though Peter is no longer able to be at the store, he is here in spirit and it is a great honor for us to carry on his favorite holiday tradition.”

With their Stewart’s courtesy card number, customers may donate their “T-bill” points to the local non profit of their choice. For every T-Bill designated, Walter Stewart’s Market will contribute 10 cents.

Last year, Stewart’s raised $4,806.50 for local charities during the Holiday Donation Days drive.

A list of the participating non profits is posted at each customer check-out. Shoppers who would like to participate in the Donation Days program may obtain a courtesy card from the store’s customer service staff.

Walter Stewart’s Market is located on 229 Elm Street. For more information, call 203-966-4848 or visit stewartsmarket.com.
