Caroline Brokaw Tucker and Robert Cummings of Dunbar Educational Consultants in New Canaan invite the parents of eighth, ninth and 10th graders to a free presentation on high school curriculum choices and standardized testing at 4 p.m. Sunday, February 7, in the library at St. Mark’s Church.
“We find that when we see new students in their junior or senior year of high school, many decisions involving course and standardized testing, as well as activities outside the classroom, have already been made that can limit options as they begin their college search,” said Tucker. “What a lot of students and their parents don’t realize is that they are making decisions now that have a huge impact on how their applications will be evaluated.
“We believe in mapping out a high school program in advance to make conscious choices that can maximize a student’s education and reduce stress over college admissions later on.”
Donald Dunbar founded Dunbar Educational Consultants, located at 161 Cherry Street, in 1984 to assist families in navigating the admissions process for boarding schools, colleges, graduate schools and therapeutic schools. After years of working with students and families as a teacher, counselor and chaplain at St. Paul’s School, Phillip’s Academy-Andover and the Weston, Mass., public high school, he decided to bring that experience directly to students and families who might otherwise not have access to the knowledge he gained from his work with colleges and schools. Today, Dunbar has 19 counselors.
Sunday’s presentation should run about 40 minutes and will be followed by a question and answer session.
