Conference about families is next week

“Families: A Safe Haven; Nurturing the Relationships that Matter Most,” is the theme of the upcoming interfaith women’s conference being held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 19, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 682 South Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.

Nancy Dennin will present the keynote address “Mothering and Grandmothering with Faith, Love and Humor.” Dennin received her master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, and is married to a mathematician.

A stay-at-home mom for 14 years, Dennin taught math at New Canaan High School for 26 years, and currently teaches at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull.

She will share her insight and experience as a mother of four children, and grandmother of 10. Her youngest son, David, has Down’s syndrome, and he actively competes in power lifting in the Special Olympics.

Dennin sits on the board of directors for the Special Olympics, and has been active with the organization for 15 years.

Following Dennin’s address, participants will choose to attend two of the three workshops offered by local residents.

Monique Ames and Helen Palmesi will present a class titled, “Ears that Hear and Hearts that Feel,” exploring ways consistency in the seemingly small things in life adds up to the foundation of a happy and fulfilling family life.

“No Good Women Left Behind” is the title of the workshop that Mary Lydon and Julie Thompson will be teaching.

Gary and Cathy Crittenden will provide a perspective on creating a marriage that lasts in “Avoiding the Thick of Thin Things.” They will offer practical advice to strengthen our relationship with our spouses.

Light refreshments will follow. Child care is available for children 18 months and older; register with children’s names and ages at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The deadline is March 12.
