Country School alumni get nomination

Four New Canaan Country School alumni from the Class of 2007 have recently been nominated for the 2010 United States Presidential Scholars Award. The award is given to the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

Those selected include Veer S. Dedhia, now at Brien McMahon High School; Marissa C. Friedman, Westhill High School; Ethan D. Spector, Middlesex School, and Philip T. Pennell, Rye Country Day School.

If selected, the students will travel to Washington, D.C. in April to join other scholars for several days of events including a trip to the White House to meet the president, an awards ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a community service activity to benefit a charity and performances by the Presidential Scholars of the Arts, according to a release.

To qualify, students must be United States citizens and receive a diploma January and August of the current year. They need to score exceptionally well on either the SAT of the College Board or the ACT of the American College Testing Program.

The program was established in 1964 by executive order of the president and expanded in 1979 to include students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars.

New Canaan Country School is an independent school serving 615 students from lower Fairfield County from beginners through ninth grade.
