Presentation discusses school's future

The public is invited to a New Canaan League of Women Voters-sponsored presentation by Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Abbey and Board of Education members Penny Rashin and Nick Williams at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at Lapham Community Center.

Speakers will give their insights on how school administration and the Board of Education are planning for the schools in light of a changing economy. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions, which is not given at regular school board meetings, according to a release from the league.

Several discussion points have been provided to panelists in advance of the event:

• Plans for governance and oversight of New Canaan public schools in response to several years of budget-cutting and elimination of teacher’s aides in classrooms and on playgrounds

• Long-term and strategic priorities in dealing with future budget cuts (such as increasing class size)

• How budget cuts affect setting objectives and measuring results relative to expectations as well as district reference groups

• What other towns are doing in similar circumstances

For information on joining the local league, call Ruth Laird at 203-966-1148 or Barbara Beall 203-966-1658.
