Is there a comprehensive directory of New Canaan stores?

Where and when can I legally buy alcoholic beverages? 

You must be 21 to purchase or possess alcohol in Connecticut. 

Beer is available in most grocery stores and many of the convenience stores. Wine and hard liquor are available only at liquor stores. 

The state does not allow any retail beer, wine or liquor sales after 8 p.m., or on Sunday. 

 

What stores are open all night? 

The convenience store at the Mobil station on South Avenue (966-5004) is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Food Emporium, 280 Elm Street (966-7818) is open  from 7 a.m.  until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

 There are two on the same street: Canaan Parish Sweet Shoppe (966-5432) at 4 South Avenue, and Mackenzie’s at 7 South Avenue (972-1277). 

 

Where can I get fresh fish? 

Fish Tales Seafood Company (966-6300) at 53 East Avenue is open seven days a week. Fresh fish is also available at local grocery stores.

Walter Stewart’s Market, 229 Elm Street (966-4848/stewartsmarket.com). Stewarts offers an online shopping/delivery service.

The Food Emporium, 280 Elm Street (966-7818/thefoodemporium.com) also offers online ordering and delivery service.

Through the online service Peapod.com, Stop & Shop will deliver to New Canaan. 

The Silvermine Market, 1032 Silvermine Avenue (966-4050/silverminemarket.com) offers gourmet deli meats, organic snacks, and frozen foods as well as a take-out menu. 

 

Are there any fresh produce stands around? 

From mid-June until mid-November, a farmers market will be held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Center School parking lot. Fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, flowers and baked goods are all available. Some vendors are certified organic. 

Walter Stewart’s Market also offers fresh, organic produce. 

 

Where can I pick my own fruits and vegetables? 

Though there are no pick-your-own places in New Canaan, there are several in nearby towns. 

Warrups Farm in West Redding (938-9403) is certified organic. It has pumpkins, vegetables, fruit and flowers, and maple syrup. 

Candee Farms in Easton (268-5223) offers pick-your-own peas in mid-June, raspberries  and vegetables July through October, and pumpkins in season.

Silverman's Farm, also in Easton (261-3306) has pick-your-own peaches, apples and plums starting in July.

 

Is there a convenience store in town? 

Mackenzie’s at 7 South Avenue, 972-1277, carries a variety of party items, newspapers, cold beverages, lottery tickets, office supplies, candies and other goods. 

The Mobil station (966-5004) on South Avenue also has a convenience store. 

 

Where can I have a passport photo taken?

Gramophone Photo (972-0002) at 99 Main Street can take your photos for you. Also CVS Pharmacy, 94 Park Street (966-0009) and Walgreen's Pharmacy at 36 Pine Street (801-0121).

 

Is there a bookstore in town?

Elm Street Books is at 175 Elm Street (966-4545/ElmStreetBooks.com). A bookstore with a religious affiliation is The Lion’s Den Book & Gift Store (966-3838) on the grounds at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge.

 

What malls are in the area? 

A ride up Route 7 into Danbury leads to the Danbury Fair Mall (Park Avenue exit), with more that 200 stores, including J. Crew, Banana Republic, Aeropostale, Hollister, Sears, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor and J.C. Penney. It is the area’s largest retail complex. 

The Stamford Town Center at Greyrock Place in downtown Stamford offers 135 retail outlets. The Trumbull Mall, exit 48 off the Merritt Parkway, is also nearby.
