How big is New Canaan?

New Canaan is 22.5 square miles and is bordered by Darien to the south, Stamford to the west, Pound Ridge, N.Y. to the north and Norwalk and Wilton to the east. 

 

How many people live here?

According to the 2009 town profile from the Connecticut Economic Resource Center, New Canaan’s population in 2008 was 19,691. There are 9,511 males and 10,180 females. The town’s racial makeup is as follows:

  • White, 18,180
  • Asian Pacific, 660
  • Hispanic, 551
  • Black, 417
  • Other/multi-race, 428
  • Native American, 6

 

How does the population break down by age?

According to the CERC town profile, New Canaanites fall into the following age ranges:

  • 0-4: 1,337 (6%)
  • 5-17: 4,248 (21%)
  • 18-24: 1,010 (5%)
  • 25-49: 6,153 (32%)
  • 50-64: 4,272 (22%)
  • 65+: 2,671 (14%)

The median age is 42.

 

What is the average income?

The median household income in 2008 was $180,161 compared to $81,058 for Fairfield County. 

 

What does the real estate picture look like?

 

Until the financial crises of 2008 became full strength in September, the real estate market in New Canaan was doing relatively well. While there were 149 closings in the first three quarters of 2008, as compared to 217 in 2007, the third quarter of ’08 saw a respectable 62 sales. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter, when the banking crises escalated, that New Canaan real estate slowed dramatically. In the last three months of  ’08 there were only 14 closings, down 62 percent from ’07 and 67 percent from ‘06.

What is the town’s labor force and what is the unemployment rate?

According to the Connecticut Department of Labor statistics from December 2008,  New Canaan’s labor force numbered 9,051 people. Of those, 8,676 were employed, with 375 people unemployed. This resulted in an unemployment rate of 4.1 percent, up from a 2.8 percent  unemployment rate in 2007. 

 

How far is New Canaan from Connecticut’s capital?

New Canaan is 59 miles southwest of Hartford, the state’s capital. It is 152 miles from Boston and 41 miles from New York City. 

 

How far is New Canaan from Indian Point?

New Canaan is approximately 20 miles from the nuclear power plant in Buchanan, N.Y. 

 

What is the average temperature?

The Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University says the average winter temperature on the Fahrenheit scale is 31.8 degrees, spring 47.7 degrees, summer, 70.1 degrees and fall, 52.9 degrees. According to weather.com, the average high in July is 84 degrees, and the average low is 17 degrees in January. The record high was 102 degrees in July 1995. The record low was 18 degrees below zero in January 1982. 

 

What is the average precipitation?

Statistics indicate the annual rainfall in this area is 50.49 inches, which includes about 44 inches of snow. May is the wettest month. 

Although Northern New England receives more snow, it gets less total precipitation than here.
