After months of negotiating, the Board of Education unanimously approved a new three-year contract with the New Canaan Education Association at last night’s school board meeting. The contract takes effect July 1, 2010.
The agreement, which is similar to other comparable school districts, including Westport, will result in a 0.97 percent increase in net cost to the town the first year, and 1.9 percent in the second and third year.
“The negotiations were tough, they were absolutely tough,” Kathy Smith, chairman of the school board, told the Advertiser this morning. “The teachers appreciate that the town is not in the financial position that it was a few years ago.”
“What we came out with was a fair agreement for both sides, and that’s what you always strive for,” she added.
Town Council will have the opportunity to review the contract over the next month.
More details will appear in this week’s Advertiser.
