Tree warden plans removal of 10 trees on West Road

Tree Warden John Howe has decided to remove 10 of the 22 trees proposed for removal along West Road, following a public hearing held Wednesday and written objection from area residents. His decision was released this afternoon.

“I considered all comments received in person and in writing prior to and at the public hearing,” Howe said in his written decision.

The 12 other trees once considered for removal will be pruned.

“The trees which can be saved by pruning will be pruned to reduce weight,” he said. “In some cases, they will have to be pruned severely.”

The decision also states that the town plans to consult with John Moran and Dave Hayner, both Connecticut licensed arborists, regarding the pruning.

With the Board of Selectmen’s recent approval of a $25,000-line item for replanting, officials will be meeting with individual property owners to discuss replanting, Howe said.

“The town will coordinate with the Tree Committee, tree warden and the property owners on selection and locations of new trees,” the decision said.
