For the first time in 14 years, New Canaan Democrats are calling a downtown storefront home for the election season.

About 75 people attended the Democratic Town Committee’s opening celebration of campaign headquarters at 110 Main Street Saturday. Among candidates in attendance were Congressman Jim Himes, running to keep his seat for the 4th District; John Hartwell, candidate for state Senate, District 26; Nancy Barton, candidate for state Senate, District 36, and Denise Merrill, candidate for secretary of the state.

“We really decided this year was a crucial year to have headquarters in that there are so many open seats and so many candidates that are at such extreme ends of the spectrum and through different events, it was really felt that the presence of Democrats in New Canaan needed to be emphasized, and, it’s an exciting election year,” said Ginny Apy, DTC chair.

“We’ve had lots of new people come in who want to be involved, which is wonderful,” Apy said. “So, it’s as much for our outreach as it is for education on the candidates and to work on getting out the vote.”

The Democratic campaign headquarters is open Monday through Friday, from about 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, from about 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, from about noon to 4 or 5 p.m., Apy said.

The space will be used for a variety of things, including debate parties and post card writing parties, a place for volunteers to work on mailings and phone banking. Those interested in the elections may stop by and pick up information on candidates, bumper stickers and lawn signs.

“We’ve got it all,” Apy said.

The space also includes a small area where children of volunteers may sit and play during activities.

The Republican Town Committee expects to open a campaign headquarters location later this week, according to Chairman James O’Hora.

Incumbents are even starting to struggle in New England, where Jim Himes was one of two incumbents recently downgraded from “likely” to “leans” Democratic by Larry Sabato. The problem with Himes’ record of punishing success so that he can subsidize failure is the unintended, if not unexpected, consequence of distorting the economy. If one ignores the costs and does not take into account incentives, then Himes’ ideas are not so terrible. However, costs and incentives matter and have played a role in the public policy outcome of the past two years. Voters are getting more of what we have subsidized (failure) and less of what we punished (success) and are left paying the costs. While it has been an expensive experiment, it is at least comforting to see the results confirm every one of the previous social experiments in government-run economies.

Geez, Chris (ccdemuth)! You were AT the opening! You could offer some first-hand commentary.

Can't you write about the stories themselves, rather than copy-and-pasting the same comment from Patch and Topix and the dozen other stories about Himes?

The opening was great. Democrats are working hard to reach out to voters in New Canaan. Voters walk in every day for information or to volunteer. We have many events scheduled and will continue to straight through Nov. 2. Anyone who wants to help out or learn more can see what;s up at Democratic HQ in New Canaan at http://newcanaandems.info

Fair enough. First-hand commentary: As for my Democratic friends, David was a perfect gentleman. Congressman Himes was, too. The opening was great. Gracious hosts, good food, and interesting conversation. We discussed a bit of economics and various candidates were kind enough to answer my questions. While political differences loom large from the middle of a political campaign, from a distance there is much that we share. Doubtlessly, they want what is best for our country and for their kids. Also, I think that there is a common preference for a real public policy debate that gets somewhat lost in the mechanics of our vigorous democracy. So it was a fun event. There; that is as much of an advertisement as you’ll get out of me!
