Susana Guevara Knoop Calhoun, a former 25-year New Canaan resident, died Thursday, October 15.
Born in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1919, Ms. Calhoun spent her youth there, in Chicago, Ill., and in Santiago, Chile. Completing her education in London, England, she married Walter Arend Knoop, an electronics engineer and president of Gawler Knoop Company in Roseland, N.J. The couple resided in Essex Fells, where they raised two sons and a daughter, Jon Walter, Peter Arend and Susana Guevara.Ms. Calhoun was a pioneer and fund raiser in the early years of The Juvenile Diabetic Association, family members said. After the death of her husband, she married Donald Calhoun of New Canaan.
Ms. Calhoun spent her last 10 years in Shelburne, Vt., close to her daughter, who cared for her until her death.
“Susana, a woman of distinct style and consummate traveler, explored the world, delighting in each destination, be it a house party in Scotland or sailing in St. Martin,” family members said. “Susana was happiest when surrounded by friends and family, all of whom miss her dearly. Thank you, Banda!”
