Every time she steps on the basketball court, New Canaan senior point guard Sarah Mannelly manages to amaze Rams' head coach Kim Palmer

With the Rams trailing by two and the seconds ticking off the clock in the third quarter on Thursday night, Mannelly drove around Fairfield-Ludlowe’s Sarah Nesi along the baseline, leaped into the air and put up a shot while floating out of bounds. The perfectly-placed shot sailed high into its arc and came down through the net as the horn sounded.

“When she took the shot, I said ‘damn, I’m going to miss her next year’,” Palmer said. “She does something every game and it puts a smile on my face when I see a move like that.”

Although the New Canaan High School boys basketball team came into Greenwich High School’s gym with only one win, the Rams weren’t a team that was going to just let the Cardinals walk all over them.

In fact, it was New Canaan that dominated play early, grabbing a 17-8 first quarter lead and nearly pulling off the upset over Greenwich. However Big Red was too strong down the stretch and came away with the 46-39 victory over the Rams on Tuesday night.

To watch Rami Hamdan throw a shot put is to witness a well-oiled machine. Hamdan hits all his marks seemingly with little exertion, but the put leaves his hand like it was shot from a cannon.

“A lot of the FCIAC throwers are just trying to muscle it out,” Hamdan said. “I’m more of a finesse sort of thrower. I try to get to my positions and if you’re able to do that, you don’t need to be as strong. It’s finding that in-between where you get after it, but at the same time, you’re hitting your marks.”

Hamdan was certainly hitting the marks last Thursday when he captured the conference shot put crown during the FCIAC boys track and field championship meet, held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
