Kirk Bamford knew he had a pretty good collection of soccer players when he got his first look at the New Canaan girls in action during the preseason. But reaching the championship game of the FCIAC tournament? That was a difficult wager to make.
“If I knew that, I’d be on a desert island somewhere with a lottery in my back pocket,” Bamford said with a smile.

New Canaan rebounded from its first loss of the year and defeated the Fairfield-Warde Mustangs, 1-0, in the first round of the FCIAC girls’ soccer tournament Saturday afternoon at Dunning Field.
Junior striker Caroline Murray scored the game’s only goal when she caught up to a loose ball to the right of the Warde net and fired a shot to the left, beyond the grasp of Mustangs’ keeper Ali Rocchi late in the first half.

Nearly two weeks ago at Dunning Field, the New Canaan High field hockey team played a strong game against rival Greenwich, only to surrender the game’s only goal and fall, 1-0. Now, the Rams have earned a rematch.
Senior co-captain Betsy Hart scored 10:32 into the game and the Ram defense delivered an outstanding performance as New Canaan defeated the Ridgefield Tigers, 1-0, in the first round of the FCIAC tournament Friday at Dunning Field.

The New Canaan Rams football team is coming off its biggest victory of the season thus far, having beaten the previously undefeated St. Joseph Cadets, 35-25, last Saturday before a packed house during Homecoming at Dunning Field.
This Friday night’s contest against Wilton doesn’t have quite the same electricity, but make no mistake about it, the Rams aren’t about to take the Warriors lightly.

Bob Lynch had a look of startled disbelief on his face after watching Pete Demmerle play at a New Canaan Rams’ football practice during the fall of 1970. No, Demmerle hadn’t made one of his numerous fantastic catches. The NCHS senior had actually — hold your breath — dropped a ball.
Coach Lynch slowly walked over, picked up the ball, studied it a bit and then tossed it over a nearby fence.
“Defective,” was the only word the coach muttered.
Demmerle’s football career at both New Canaan and as an All-American at Notre Dame can be described as remarkable. His life was something far beyond that.

Lou Marinelli has never been a big fan of Homecoming. It’s not that the long-time New Canaan football coach doesn’t appreciate the school spirit, fun and excitement, or the activities which surround the event.
It’s just that all the damn distractions aren’t exactly a winning formula for his Rams.

Alex Spinu has spent the fall leading the New Canaan boys’ cross country team through the twists and turns of the Waveny Park trails. And when it came time to step onto the big stage of the FCIAC championships last Thursday at Waveny, the Ram sophomore was back in his familiar spot.
Spinu finished the 5K race in 17:05 to take 15th place and earn a spot on the All-FCIAC First Team. The placement was the best of the day among all New Canaan runners, but Spinu didn’t quite meet his personal goal, although he managed to keep things in perspective.
