Downtown restaurants cooperate on food drive

Restaurants in downtown Stratford are joining forces to collect food for the hungry.

Blue Point Bar & Grill, Bun N Burger, Acapulco Restaurant, McCoy’s Pub, The Shell Station, Rivenova, Stephen’s Pub & Grill and Hard’s Corner Tavern are collecting donations of nonperishable products for local food banks.

Through Nov. 22, donors will receive a voucher for 50 cents for each item given, redeemable at any of the participating restaurants.

Donations will stay in Stratford, donated through Sterling House, South End Community Center, First Haitian Evangelical Church, the Agape Food Pantry and First Baptist Church.

Lisa Dunn of Blue Point said she has been involved in similar efforts, and felt the urge to act when she heard food pantry shelves are barren this year.

“It’s Stratford people helping Stratford people,” she said.

The effort is also a chance to bring together downtown restaurants. Consultant Gary McTrottes said the goal is to forge an alliance to create an atmosphere similar to that in South Norwalk, which has thrived for years.
