Government. Politics. Elected official.

Too often, these are words or titles that are met with a great deal of disdain and mistrust by the public. Instead of being viewed as the building blocks of our democracy, the very institution of government, and the people who make it work, are reviled as self-serving and broken.

That has been true of Stratford in the last four years, and I’m running for Mayor to change that. I want to restore the public’s trust in Town Hall.

Mayor: Republican council works against town

Councilman Michael Julian and his fellow Republicans voted to intervene in a federal lawsuit involving the City of Bridgeport, the United States Army, Hollywood East and Atlantic Aviation, a hangar operator, for the express purpose of delaying the closing on the Army Engine plant. The Republican council’s action sought nothing less than to derail the single largest economic development project in our town’s history.

Fortunately, the United States District Court denied their request.

Stratford Mayor James Miron is his own worst enemy, committing a series of highly publicized gaffes that have detracted from his very good fiscal record as Stratford mayor. He deserves a second term and will get it, not due to his considerable accomplishments but because of the three challengers who will split the anti-Miron vote next Tuesday and let him squeak back in for a second term.

Stratford voters have the chance this year to re-elect Mayor Jim Miron. Re-electing Mayor Miron will provide continuity at this critical point in time. Progress has been made in many areas stalled for years, or even decades, but there is still much to do.

Mayor James Miron spent last week defending his record, as his challengers worked to convince voters they were better candidates by virtue of not being Jim Miron.

Voters will decide Tuesday who will occupy the mayor’s office in Town Hall for the next two years: Miron, the Democratic incumbent; Republican state Rep. John Harkins; or unaffiliated candidates Domenic Costello or George Mulligan.

Not being a career politician and now running for a political office for the first time, I find myself entering the process from quite a unique perspective — that of an ordinary person. From this first campaign experience I can truly empathize with voters at this point in the game who feel frustrated, confused and maybe even confounded by the smoke screen obscuring the real issues affecting our town. Special interest factions have come forth in full measure to beat the drums for their causes from the theatrical to the runways to marine life, taking full advantage of the heightened media coverage during the month before elections. This in a way is a good thing, I think; because that’s the way the game of politics is played in a healthy democracy.
