New businesses face many daunting obstacles. Typically, though, a logo font is not one of them.

But that is just the situation that Judy Jovanelly finds her business in.

Jovanelly is co-owner of The Girl Spot, which recently opened in about 1,000 square feet in a Lindeman Drive building that also houses a baseball training center and a gym.

Her business partner is Lee Gulash of Stratford.

The site looks like a typical ballet studio, with a hardwood dance floor and one wall covered with mirrors. The only difference

Reyna Pickus, like most residents, received her questionnaire from the U.S. Census Bureau this week.

But something didn’t look right. Although the ZIP code correctly read 06614, her town was listed as Bridgeport, not Stratford.

“It should be Stratford,” Pickus said.

Even $1.6 million in cuts won’t keep municipal taxes from going up for fiscal year 2010-11, Mayor John A. Harkins said Friday.

Harkins proposed a reduction of $1.6 million in spending for the next fiscal year, with cuts in discretionary programs, services, and expenditures.

The state Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Milford Police Department are investigating the collapse of a trench that sent a worker at the Moses Wheeler Bridge construction site to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries Tuesday.

   

State probes utilities' response to storm

Following an Associated Press report Tuesday morning that CL&P held back workers this weekend to avoid paying overtime when much of Southwestern Connecticut lost power from the heavy storm, the state has initiated a probe into the utility companies' actions.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell Tuesday announced she has asked the state Department of Public Utility Control and the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security to examine the actions of the state’s two largest electric utilities — Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating — in the initial hours of the weekend storm.

The storm contributed to the deaths of at least three people, downed thousands of trees and tree limbs, snapped hundreds of utility poles and left nearly 100,000 Connecticut homes and businesses without power.

   

Volunteers needed for Great Meadows Marsh tours

Volunteer tour guides are needed to assist Stratford public school fourth grade teachers and students with a hands-on experience learning how the Great Meadows Marsh and Long Island Sound interact. The program teaches young people about wetlands, the waters of the Sound and the dangers of pollution.
