State, town honor World War II veterans

Mayor James R. Miron and Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz honored more than 200 World War II veterans from Stratford Oct. 17 at Bunnell High School.
Stratford is one of 118 municipalities to host such a ceremony, organized by the Secretary of the State’s Office.
More than 500 veterans, family members and friends attended, making Stratford’s the second largest ceremony in the state.
“As mayor, and as a fellow veteran, I pledge that I will continue to ensure our veterans’ service to our nation, and to our community, is honored,” Miron said. “Our veterans are an invaluable part of the fabric that makes our Stratford community so special and their service will never be forgotten.”
The ceremony was organized by the Secretary of the State’s Office; Town Clerk Susan Pawluk; Dick Kennedy, commander of the VFW Raymond T. Goldbach Post 9460; and Dr. Dudley Orr, principal of Bunnell High School, and supported by more than 25 community sponsors, including Connecticut Distributors, Inc., the ceremony’s main sponsor, and members of the local clergy.
The Bunnell High School Select Choir, under the direction of Sara Kohane, director of choirs, performed the processional song, “America the Beautiful.” The choir also sang “American Anthem” featured in the Ken Burns documentary “The War.”
Rachel Junga, a Bunnell student, performed the National Anthem.
Ushers Club of Bunnell High School was led by Vicki Priddle.
The Rev. John Gamble of Friendship Baptist Church gave the invocation.
The Rev. Julie-Ann Silberman-Bunn of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Bridgeport, president of the Stratford Clergy Association, delivered the benediction.
The Color Guard from Raymond T. Goldbach VFW Post 9460 presented the colors.
