When you rack up 19 first downs and accumulate 382 yards of offense, it usually adds up to a victory.

The Bunnell High football team saw four 12-play drives stall in a 49-6 home loss to Masuk on Saturday night.

It was the fourth loss in a row for the 3-6 Bulldogs as they get set to prepare for a Thanksgiving Day showdown at Penders Field against cross-town rival Stratford.

It looked as if the Bunnell High football team would get off the snide against Notre Dame-Fairfield after one quarter of play, but the locals couldn’t maintain that early momentum and lost a 13-12 decision to the visiting Lancers on Friday night to fall to 3-5 this season.

All Bunnell High coach Dave Jockle and his Lady Bulldogs could do was praise Joel Barlow for its play in the finals of the South-West Conference girls volleyball tournament in Oxford on Saturday night.

“Barlow played very well,” Jockle said after the sixth-seeded Falcons won a 3-1 decision. “They served very well and their serve-receive allowed setter Renee Wasko to be on target all match.

The momentum swung back and forth too many times to count and the lead changed three times in the second half and twice in the final minute when coach Craig Bruno’s Bunnell High football team played host to New Fairfield on Oct. 30.

Trailing 19-16 in the South-West Conference contest, the Bunnell defense had one more stand in it late in the fourth quarter.

Lauren Sara raced around the Bunnell High track on Monday afternoon.

Three days removed from winning the Class L girls cross country championship on Oct. 31, Sara and Bruce Berkeley, a senior classmate and a member of the Bulldogs’ boys team, were prepping for practice.

It has been that kind of extra duty that makes Sara one of the contenders for this week’s State Open title, admittedly a dream finish since the season began for the dedicated runner.

Crusted in mud, too tired to raise their arms to lift helmets over their heads in victory, coach Duane Shirden’s Stratford High football team left it all on Joel Barlow’s field when the Red Devils defeated the Falcons, 41-38, in double overtime on Oct. 31.

The psychology of being the top seed for the South-West Conference girls volleyball tournament and the fact his Lady Bulldogs had already defeated Stratford High during the regular season weighed heavily on Bunnell High coach Dave Jockle entering his team’s quarterfinal match with the Red Devils at Ray Needham Gymnasium on Nov. 2.
