Rep. Grogins: State funds to expand Longfellow School secured

Bridgeport will receive more than $22 million in state funds to build more classroom space at Longfellow School, according to state Rep. Auden Grogins, a Black Rock Democrat

The funding was part of a school construction package passed by the state Legislature. Longfellow serves pre-kindergartners to eighth-graders in parts of Black Rock and the West End.

The proposed project would add more than 24,500 square feet to the school for classroom space, special education facilities, and expanded computer and science labs.

Grogins said Longfellow, built in 1958, has long needed to be updated and expanded. The school has not had any substantial renovations for over 20 years, she said.

Grogins is the only Bridgeport legislator serving on the Education Committee. She is a former city Board of Education president.
