Mayor Bill Finch began the city's Black History Month observance Feb. 2 at City Hall Annex with "The History of Soul Food," a presentation by Chef Pierre-Andre Desruisseaux of Metric Bar & Grill in Downtown Bridgeport, talk about the history and meaning of Soul Food. Grant could boost jobs

High school students will soon have another option to continue their education. Housatonic Community College recently received word that the school has qualified for a state grant program to open an advanced manufacturing center.

The total value of the grant is not yet final, but Housatonic is one of four state community colleges that will share $17.8 million in funds. School officials have approved a $6.28-million program that President Anita Gliniecki said is ready for architectural renderings.

"We have the space picked out, and we have drawn up preliminary plans," she said.

City receives grant for financial literacy education

Bridgeport has been awarded a $15,000 DollarWISE Innovation Grant from the U.S. Conference of Mayors to help students learn about financial literacy.

The city will be partnering with the Personal Care America Federal Credit Union, Credit Union League of Connecticut, Greater Bridgeport Regional Business Council and Bridgeport Board of Education to offer a Financial Literacy Campaign to Bridgeport students. With DollarWISE funding, a financial education curriculum will be implemented to provide middle school and high school students an understanding of the importance of personal finance.

   

Increasing transportation costs a hard pitch

State Rep. Kim Fawcett told a forum on Connecticut's transportation needs Jan. 20 that it would be difficult to persuade residents in southern Connecticut to accept increased rail fares or new highway tolls without ironclad guarantees of improvements to roads and other infrastructure.
