altAs I write this month's 'Raise it Up' column, it is the Jewish holiday of Tu Bishvat.

This holiday is a kind of Jewish Arbor Day; a day to give thanks for trees, the fruit of the trees and the beauty of our natural world. However, the historical origins of Tu Bishvat were derived by the Rabbis of old from a commandment in the Hebrew Bible:

"When you enter the land [of Israel] and plant any tree for food, you shall regard its fruit as forbidden. Three years it shall be forbidden for you, not to be eaten" (Leviticus 19:23).

altWe need the death penalty to be outlawed in 26 states to present our case to the Supreme Court — that the death penalty is biased and unconstitutional, and it needs to be banned in the United States.

Connecticut has the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States. Studies find that lack of access to screening services and lack of insurance are two of the barriers women face.
