When it comes to planning the Mark Twain Library’s Art Show Preview Party, there are two main challenges: How do you make the town’s signature event a standout each year? and How do you do so on a considerably tight budget?

Fortunately for party co-chairs Emery Beach and Melissa Wright, you do it with the help and generosity of friends… friends of the library, that is. This year’s team of vendors has already gone above and beyond the call to make sure that the 37th Annual Mark Twain Library Preview Gala is the best ever. And with the theme of this year’s fete, “Paint The Town Red-ding!” they’re having fun doing it.

A whimsical lighthouse made by a Redding woman and her friend is included in The Maritime Aquarium’s eighth annual Festival of Lighthouses.

Dianna Manger of Redding created her entry, “The Halo Effect,” with friend Barbara Seith of Norwalk. It’s decorated with a menagerie of household objects, including flip-flops, Pez dispensers, plastic containers and stuffed animals. The light itself shines through an opening cut into a polka-dotted Coca-Cola tin that once held caramel corn, and a Planter’s cashew can serves as its crown.

The two women were so excited about their project that they kept a blog about its creation. It may be found online at FestivalofLighthouses.blogspot.com.
